Introduction

This subject of “Authority” is important and foundational. Differing attitudes toward this subject form the beginning of so much division in the religious world. Yet the scriptures clearly express that submission to the authority of King Jesus is central to discipleship.

Background Text: Mt. 28:18-20

Making Disciples, Two Keys:

  1. “Baptizing them”
  2. “Teaching them to observe all that I commanded you”

Here Jesus underlines the central issue in our discussion of “authority”: "Am I willing to do His will?” As we consider the subject of “authority” together, let’s honestly examine our hearts.

  1. The Obedience of Jesus
    1. “It is Written” (Mt. 4:3-10)
    2. “I Have Come to Fulfill” (Mt. 5:17-19)
    3. “Zeal For Your House Will Consume Me” (Jn. 2:13-17)
    4. “My Food is to Do the Will of Him Who Sent Me” (Jn. 4:31-34)
    5. “I Always Do The Things That Are Pleasing To Him” (Jn. 8:28-29)
    6. “Glorify Your Name” (Jn. 12:27-28)
    7. “Not My Will But Your Will” (Mt. 26:36-46)
    8. “He Learned Obedience” (He. 5:7-9)
  2. The authority of Jesus
    1. “All Authority” (Mt. 28:28-; Ep. 1:20-23; Ph. 2:9-11)
    2. The “Gentile” Centurion Understood Authority (Mt. 8:5-13)
  3. Summary and Balance
    1. As Disciples We Imitate His Obedient Heart
    2. As Disciples We Submit to His Authority
    3. Obedience and Grace

Conclusion

These principles are counter-culture: authority, obedience and submission. Yet if we want to follow Jesus, we must embrace them.
